In recent years, government officials have repeatedly announced the return of military service.
The idea was announced in January 2024. At that time, the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces launched an initiative and proposed to the president the introduction of military conscription.
In September of the same year, Vucic signed an agreement to return the compulsory military service to Serbia.
Since its abolition, 1. January 2011. the military is only voluntary.

Among the countries that have not abolished compulsory military service are Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Austria, Turkey, Estonia, Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.
